Hsuntze: The Moulder of Ancient Confucianism, (Paperback)

"Hsuntze: The Moulder of Ancient Confucianism" is a comprehensive scholarly exploration of the life and philosophy of Xunzi (Hsuntze), one of the most significant figures in the development of early Chinese thought. Written by noted sinologist Homer H. Dubs, this work provides a detailed analysis of how Xunzi shaped the Confucian tradition during the turbulent late Warring States period, bridging the gap between ancient idealism and practical governance.

Unlike his predecessor Mencius, Xunzi proposed that human nature is inherently problematic and requires the discipline of education, ritual (Li), and law to achieve virtue and social harmony. Dubs meticulously examines Xunzi's logical rigor, his contributions to political theory, and his emphasis on the role of the state in moral cultivation. The book highlights Xunzi's departure from more mystical interpretations of Confucianism, favoring a realistic approach that eventually laid the groundwork for the institutionalization of Confucian thought during the Han Dynasty.

This study remains an essential resource for readers interested in Eastern philosophy, ancient history, and political science. By articulating the intellectual evolution of one of China's greatest masters, "Hsuntze: The Moulder of Ancient Confucianism" offers deep insights into the moral and social foundations that have governed Chinese civilization for centuries.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
